From the Front Lines to a Quiet Room

I've spent my whole career showing up for people in their hardest moments. Now I do it here — with you.

    My Story

Hi, I'm Valerie Dessaulles, and I'd like to share a bit about my journey.

For over 12 years, I served as a paramedic, where I had the privilege of supporting people during some of their toughest times. In those moments, I saw how deeply people longed for a compassionate, understanding person to talk to — a safe space where they could truly be heard. That inspired me to pursue a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University, so I could continue helping others in a deeper, more holistic way.

Since 2009, my heart has been in the helping profession. As a paramedic, I focused on the body's incredible ability to handle trauma. Now, as a therapist, I'm honoured to walk alongside people as they navigate their emotional and mental health. The human body is resilient — but sometimes it needs a little extra support to fully heal. That's where I come in.

Recognizing the impact of trauma in our own lives can be really difficult, and that's why having someone you trust to listen and guide you matters so much. As a paramedic, I built that trust with complete strangers in their moments of need. I would love the opportunity to be that trusted person for you, too.

Every Session Is Personalized — Just Like You

I'm a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). Over the years I've worked with many wonderful people, each with their own unique story — and it's that diversity that keeps me inspired.

My approach is rooted in a simple belief: every person is unique, so the tools we use in therapy should be too. Each of us carries experiences and survival mechanisms that have shaped us — sometimes they help, sometimes they don't. Together, we'll work on understanding and accepting those parts of yourself so you can move forward with confidence and self-compassion.

"I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it."

    My Mission

Reaching out for help takes great courage, especially when life feels overwhelming and there seems to be nowhere left to turn. It's a powerful step toward self-growth, and it's my goal to help you find the missing piece that brings clarity and healing. I believe you already have the strength within you to heal — I'm here to support the journey.

    My Vision

Everyone deserves happiness, fulfillment, and the experience of being truly heard. You are not defined by your past. Change is always possible, and with the right tools and guidance, you can create a new path forward.

My office is conveniently located right on the Trans-Canada Highway in downtown Salmon Arm — easy to access from anywhere in the Shuswap. In-person sessions are available, and I also offer online and phone appointments if that suits your life better.
